10. What is frustrating me is that I cannot perform step 2. I select the twisted rectangle with the direct selection tool and nothing happens. I cannot drag the shape as you did in the second photo.

11. Can you just draw a line with pencil tool, no filling but only outline and then go and try if your EXPAND menu is working or not by expanding the graphic and see if it turns into object with path points. Im not familair with CS4 but it should be same,
